An HD5770 would be a decent upgrade at $150. But if you're looking for similar performance, perhaps an HD5670/HD5750. ($100/$120).

The HD4670 is cheap and the closest in performance to your old card. That said I would spend at least a little more for the HD5670 and if you can afford it the HD5770 is a good choice for another card to last you long term.

Yes- depends on budget and if you are looking for DX11. Without DX11 support, you've got a clear winner in the 4850 for $85-95.
If you want DX11, you've got the 5750 at $120ish, and the 5770 for $150. You could even do the 5670, but the 4850 will blow it away for the same price. Even the 5670 though is a tier above the 8800GTS 640 in Tom's latest graphics card heirarchy.

the Nvidia 9600GT and ATI 5670 will give you a slight bump in performance at decent prices

you may even find a cheap 8800GT/9800GT

What resolution you play at?

What is your budget for the upgrade?

And

Which PSU do you have?

The individual who posted with the suggestion of a 4670 must either be joking or has something lose up there. 5670 -5770 is the best for you when it comes to ATI and DX11 while a 4770 is also a good bet if found cheap. However if the prices aren't just what you would like then a 9800gt ( avoid every thing that doesn't have a 6pin power connector) is a very rock solid card. All of the above cards except for the low end 4670 are guaranteed to be equal to your G80 gts 640 in the majority of games out there.
