I5-750 build or i7-930 build

I'm trying to decide between an LGA1156 based i5-750 build, and an LGA1366 based i7-930 build, the builds are within $100 of eachother and main differences are the video card and processor.

either build will be used for the purpose of gaming, web browsing, and possibly running Linux in virtual PC. I will eventually be crossfiring either system and will probably lightly overclock either cpu to run a little over 3.0Ghz. Either build will also be using this 24" 1920x1080 monitorthat i already have.

please help me out by recommending new parts and choosing the better build. if i left anything out just let me know.

i don't have an OS, all i have is the monitor and keyboard :/

but if i could have both the i7 and 5870 for the same price the decision is almost a no brainer.

any ideas on how the different power supply and ram match up from my i7 build to niklas's?

Not sure why you're getting Win 7 pro. It's only useful if you need an XP emulator (non gaming) or enterprise networking. Don't need thermal grease for such a light overclock. HAF 922 Hyper 212 comes with OK CM grease.

For your uses the performance diffence btwn 1156 and 1366 is pretty much non existent.

Actually if you're willing to spend a few $ more

They're paying you to take the floppy with this combo, so why not eh?

With this card, you won't need to upgrade a GPU until next gen consoles come out, 2014 earliest.

Comes out to $1678.90 before shipping and MIR
$1657.92 after Shipping and MIR

Honestly, I don't see why you would want 8 threads, that's really only useful to graphic professionals.
However, a 860 fits in the budget so y not?

If you want, you can save ~$70 by dropping to a i5-750 and using same RAM.

^no, not at all

read this : http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] 599-6.html

With rapidly-increasing prices over $200 offering smaller and smaller performance boosts in games, we have a hard time recommending anything more expensive than the Core i5-750.

Not even close. In fact, the half the cost Phenom II x4 isn't even a bottleneck. If you're an overclocker, you'll see that it's even less of an issue as stock speed 955 is enough to max a 5970.

http://www.legionhardware.com/articles_pages/cpu_scalin...

In fact, I'm pretty sure you can take a $74 Athlon II x3 and OC it to 3.8ghz and it'll max a 5970.

If you can swing it +1 to Banthracis build only thing tho is you wont have xfire /sli ( but with the HD 5970 ) so what :)

Yea, going my build with an i5-750 is fine.

I just threw in the 860 as a compromise btwn the 2 builds, though like I said, 8 threads won't do anything for gaming.

OH, throw that sapphire 5970 on auto notify, it's coming back in stock next tue and I can guarantee it'll sell out before the day is over :D
