Helping my brother upgrade, but a bit unfamiliar with circa 2006 AMD stuff.

We have an AM2 equipped with an Athlon 64 x2 6000+ at 3.0gb. I understand the AM2 can utilize processors designed for AM2+ without maximizing their potential, such as the Phenoms, but overall, what would optimize this the best, with all considered. Just doing some things with spare parts to spiff this up (Eg, 400 to 667 mhz ram, vista to 7).

Looking to find the best processor available that i can physically cram into the AM2.

Thanks in advance.

Is this a HP/Compaq, that model is called the Nettle 2 and normal used with OEM PC's.

If yes, then Athlon 64 X2 is as good as you'll get.

Now, if your lucky and get the Nettle 3-GL8E model, you can use AMD Phenom X4 9600 95w processor.
