I've just put together a new PC and though I'd play through Thief 3 again.
Now my new system is fairly hefty so I thought I'd also install the high-res
texture packs.

I'm getting very odd performance. The game seems to run really well (80+
FPS) for about half a second, then drops a load of frames for the other half
of the second. Then runs really well for another half second and low frames
again for another half second, and so on, and so on. This happens all the
time (at least in the training mission) so It's not connected to what is
actually being displayed. I've not tried without the -high-res texture
packs yet. I'd though I'd check here first to see if anyone has experienced
the same problem.

My system:

Athlon FX-55
Radeon X850 XT
2 SATA 150 HDs in RAID 0
2 GB 3200 DDR RAM
Nforce 4 motherboard
SB Audigy 2
Windows XP SP2
All latest drivers

Thanks.

Have you tried disabling V-sync? As I've understood it...if it's enabled and
your monitor runs at 85Hz the game will run at that framerate, but once it
can't maintain that framerate it drops to half of 85fps to have it synced
with the monitor.

Everything runs real fast over here.

P4/3.4
ATI All In Wonder Radeon 9600
one gig of ram
gmae is installed on a 7200 rpm 80 gig drive fat32.
Windows 2000 pro. dx9c installed.
Using the onboard sound.

(pc is not paid off yet so cant get a real sound card)

It might be your vid card. the game works better with some cards
versus the others.

No, it's not that. I've got V-Sync of by default. Thanks for taking the
trouble to reply though.

Are you using the high-res texture packs?

I'm about to try it without them installed.

Can't say they made any performance differences when I used them (several
months ago - maybe they're different now.)

Where does one get the high-res texture packs? I am almost tempted to
reinstall T3 just to check it out. It did not come with the game CD's
did it?
I have a Sapphire Radeon 9200, so it may not make a whole bunch of
difference with me.

Checking out the comparisons, there are some improvements. One in the
Misc. section it looks as though the door does not highlight. Does it
mean you can't tell if it is frobbable or not?
You have to sign up to Gamespot to be able to download them. Maybe
after the T3 FM's come out I will try and download them.

Thought you might use the program when I saw their
logo at the top of the page. Good program. Best
$20. I ever spent.

For those of you reading this that are unfamiliar with
GetRight, it's a downloading program. Handy since
you don't have to download the whole file all at once
and can do bits at a time. Much better than GoZilla.
It can be found at Tucows. Download of this
program is free (GetRight 5.2b). Subscription to
upgrades costs. I paid for it about 5 years ago and
get periodic upgrades.
(this has been an unpaid advertisement. Mos is in
no way affiliated with either GetRight nor Tucows.
The opinion is his and in no way reflects those of the
above mentioned web sites or program companies)

None that I've ever found nor noticed.
GetRight also lets you know when there is an update available.
About once a year they send out notices that if you should
wish to give an extra donation, they will accept it, but they
do not press the issue if you do not donate, nor does it
effect your upgrading.
The program tells you the size of the file, how fast it's
downloading, and aprox time left before completed. It will
also look for mirrors, if need be.
Right now, I'm downloading two of the files. It can be set to
keep going so when one file is finished, it takes up the next one.
Handy if you want to download while you run off to the store
or go outside and fire up the grill.

Grief, I sound like I should be a salesman for them.

Well I can also whole-heartedly recommend GetRight - my favourite download

I have a friend that has a lower than yours kind of card. He ended
up buying a ATI Radeon ehhh something that had the extra texture level
and the lighting stuff. gads this is bad help I suppose. but he said
it made a hugh difference for his games. He and His friends (we live in
different cities) local to him were amazed at the differences.

I use a ATI Radeon AIW All In Wonder here....

If I recall, I passed on the higher card because of the slots I had
in my new computer. I think it was only a 4 bit instead of an 8 bit
slot. Or something like that.

Generally an 8x AGP card will work fine in a 4x AGP slot. There is really
only a miniscule difference in performance. You need to do benchmarking
to even notice it. It's more of a marketing thing the video card makers
were hyping.

Yeah I have a 8x card. No big thrill here.

Odd. My graphics card is one of the faster ones on the market at the moment,
of course it is possible that the game just doesn't like it.

I've just done a software rebuild and I've reinstalled T3 but no texture
packs yet. It's working fine with no texture packs now. I'll try it again.

And you're making it difficult for me to bonk her
on the head if you keep making chicken noises.

You're too drunk and enjoying the view from
the inn balcony to worry. Hey, you can see your
store from up here.....
