My applications slow and fail when rebuilding RAID after a drive fails. I am using the onboard Intel RAID controller. I wonder if i need a seperate controller (expensive) or just increase CPU & memory will help.

Welcome to the Forum!

If the on-board RAID works, stay with it. Increasing installed RAM will boost your computer performance. Make sure that you get compatible RAM.

In addition to the above, delete temp files and cookies on a regular basis. Uninstall older versions of software that you do not use. Make sure that you have the absolutely necessary programs in your "Start-up programs"
