What's up with Nvidia's weird naming scheme?

I understand AMD cards' perfectly logical scheme all right.

But Nvidia's naming is a bit stupid.


I mean, i expected there to be a GTX 360 or 380 as a perfectly logical follow up
but noooo


they skipped the 300s and went straight to 400s. WHY waste an entire generation? by the 900s they would have to do a new name scheme or something...


Then, no 460, they changed it to 470. The only logical one is the 480, the clear successor to the 280. and still.....

Apparently they reserved the 300s for low end OEM cards for some reason.

They blamed OEMs for changing the name of the GT210/220 to GT310/320.
