USB2/3 and SATA2/3 connectivity

My question is regarding devices in general, not only storage devices.. but I didn't know where to post it.

I was wondering if you have a mobo that doesn't have USB 3.0, but you have a USB 3.0 device.. would the device can still be used and perform like 2.0, or it wont run at all??

Same question about SATA3.. got a SATA3 hard drive but dont have SATA3 port on your motherboard.. can the hard drive be used?

Both will run at 2.0 speeds. Both usb and sata are backwards compatible. In the case of the hdd, sata connection will not affect performance as any mechanical hdd cannot even saturate sata 2 speeds.
