Hi frens....

Hows everyone...

I m deciding between these 2 processors for Gaming on a 24" 1980x1080 .... Then i read this article....

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/athlon-ii-x3-440-ga...

It says for a single GPU operation with a ATI 5850 a Athlon II x3 is more than enough for both minimum and maximum FPS at 24" 1980x1080.

By the way they had kept AA & AF "OFF" at 1980x1080 resolution. Would turning on AA to 4x and AF make the Athlon II x3 not able to give excellent minimum and maximum FPS at 24" 1980x1080.....???

In that case which AMD Cpu should i consider... ???

So i was wondering whether i should go for a single Gpu or keep and option of going Crossfire in the future..... Then i read this thread....

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/264181-31-best-bang-b...

According to this thread it's better to buy a value based cpu and upgrade it every 2 years rather than buying the fastest available cpu.

So what do you guys feel is the better "Upgrade Path"....???

1. Get Athlon X3 445+5850 and then when it cant play games at 1980x1020 then upgrade Cpu+Gpu+Mobo....??

or.

2. Get i7 930+5850 and then when it cant play games at 1980x1020 then add another 5850...??

Thanks

I think it depends on your budget, so how much are you looking to spend for a graphics card and a cpu cause depending on that the members of this forum can find you a great deal and performance for your money.

As for what your saying about AA in games read this link:
http://www.pantherproducts.co.uk/Articles/Graphics/anti...

As for AMD v.s Intel, They are saying that Intel is switching to a new socket and the AMD AM3 socket is going to be around a lot longer so you could upgrade your CPU more so with a AMD v.s a Intel in the future, myself I think that Intel has better performance in games.

I have some questions for you:

Whats your budget?
Are you in the US?
Did you need a motherboard, graphics card and cpu or just the last two?
Are you for sure looking to crossfire or SLi?

hi guys thanks for the replies....

shanemarines these are answers to the questions you put in.... hopefully this will help you and others in guiding me to the right path....

1. Whats your budget ?

Budget is not a problem... I can afford either of the Combinations... However if the Ahtlon II X3 is good enough for my needs then i see no point in spending Extra on the i7 930.

2. Are you in US ?

Yes & i'm near a MicroCenter so can get a i7 930 for $200.

3. Did you need a motherboard, graphics card and cpu or just the last two ?

I need all three as i'm upgrading from a 6 yr old pc.

4. Are you for sure looking to crossfire or SLI ?

i'm not sure as i have read that many games dont support it and some games actually perform worse. Also there is the concern of more power consumption, heat etc.

Therefore i'm wondering which option is better....

1. Get Athlon X3 445+5850+Mobo ???( Maybe the AM3 Mobo wont need to be replaced ) and then when it cant play games at 1980x1020 then upgrade Cpu+Gpu+Mobo....??

or.

2. Get i7 930+5850+Mobo and then when it cant play games at 1980x1020 then add another 5850...??

A few more things to consider for anyone giving me suggestions....

A. This PC will be used only for Gaming+Internet Surfing.

B. It will be used with 20"-24" 1980 x 1080 Monitor.

C. I want to be able to play all games with All High Settings+AA+AF for another 2 years before going with either Option 1 or 2 mentioned above.

Thanks in Anticipation....

since you don't upgrade very often (your current PC is 6 years old), i would go with the i7 for $200. I personally have a x3 435 that is OC to 3.3ghz but I doubt I will keep it for more then two more years. plus the i7 will let your 5850 hit its full potential, the x3 would be better with a 5770 or below.

If you want AA & AF at higher levels, its not the CPU you need to worry about. Its the GPU. It sounds what like you are looking for is more the 5870 than a 5850. Either processor would do fine. But imho prices are so low, if you go AMD, get the X4 955. No sense in getting an X3.

from your own link

"The Core i7-920 sports a clear advantage up to 1920x1080"

two things to remember, you will most likely upgrade the GPU before the CPU. Games will only get more demanding.

like i said, the x3 is a great series of budget CPUs. If you plan to upgrade in 18-24 months, then they make sense. If you don't like to upgrade your CPU, get the best one you can afford.

i know this adds nothing to the discussion, but @ the topic, i lold

the 930 is the better choice saw an artcle on toms that said an x3 445 and a 5970 have the same power as a i7 930 and a 5850

This is my thought as from what your telling me and from what I've read since your not upgrading that often your what the i7 series or the AM3 with T6 cored AMD, because I just saying the bang for your buck on the AMD 6 core is so nice, but as well for the i7 performance is so really nice! If you have the money get an i7.
