I'm building a desktop pc and want to use the 1tb HDD in my HP win 7 desktop as master (will install new version of win7) and use 1 year old 500gb in my HP as master HDD. if I shrink a 1tb HDD to clone onto the 500Gb HDD to make a bootable backup, can I unshrink the 1tb afterwards and carry on using it untill I am ready to build new PC, or will there be any problems.

yes, typically you can but be forewarned that cloning doesnt typically capture the hidden partition hp installs that has your recovery stuff on it. You can google for instructions on how to migrate that hidden partition over to the new drive.
