This is a problem that seems to happen a lot. In most cases, it is the result of corruption of the formatting data on the drive, or the directories, and can be recovered with a simple utility.
The first line of attack is one of the utilities such as Recuva ( http://www.piriform.com/recuva
) or Easeus Partition Recovery ( http://www.easeus.com/partition-recovery
) . These do a fairly narrow job of trying to fix your disk information.
If those do not work, the next level is more intense utilities which read every sector on the disk and try to salvage the data. I'm not familiar with any of these, but if the first step I suggested does not work there are a lot of members here with experience. One of them will give you suggestions. These typically cost money.
