Why are there so many different types of XFX 5770?

I am planning to crossfire my XFX 5770. There are ten different versions of just the 5770, of course two of them are overclocked models, and some versions are exactly the same, why is this? When crossfiring does it need to be the exact same model version, or can the models mix and match? If they do need to be the same is there a way to find out the model number without opening up my case?

You can use any HD5770 to crossfire, it does not need to be a specific brand or model.
