I have an Intel motherboard that has built in graphic card & audio card -
Stereo only. To get 5.1 playback is it just the case of getting a new sound
card & dropping it into one of the vacant PCI slots? If not what's
involved?

Step 1 might be to post this message to the appropriate NG.

Anyway, yes, if you get the correct sound card, you can get full
surround-sound from pretty much any MOBO. Then take a digital picture of it,
put up a subject line in all caps, and post it on this forum.
