Does anyone know why all of sudden you cant find an XFX 5850 in stock anywhere?

More about : 5850

In what country? If you are in the US/Canada just go to Newegg, they are all over.

I meant to say the XFX 5850's. I am in the US and yes, NewEgg has them all in stock except the XFX brand. I also looked everywhere else online; Amazon and others and all the XFX 5850's are out of stock.

So choose a different brand. They are all the same unless the manufactur has installed an upgraded cooler. There are a few that have made their own boards with upgraded components, but I think for the 5870, MSI is the only one that has done this.

I expect the XFX model is very popular in the US because of its double lifetime warranty. Either wait a while or do as jay2tall said and buy a different brand

They are all about to release refresh models with upgraded coolers and clock speeds etc.

I imagine they have been shifting all the old refrence stock just before the new ones come out.

Here in the UK Powercolor also have their new one out already with a great game bundle of CODMW2 and Dirt2 and for the standard UK price for a 5850 - £234.94 $353

Cant beat XFX's warranty. I'll wait....... With the Powercooler, doesnt the 128 bit memory bandwith limit the card? Or will the 4200 mhz clock speed overcome that?

I don't keep graphics cards longer than 2 years, so any warranty after that is a moot point. The only advantage to me would be you can transfer the warranty to a 2nd person if you sell it. This might be a good selling advantage, other than that I don't care.

Depends on cost. My 5870 is an ASUS, the previous 4870 was an ASUS. However, I don't have a problem with any brands that make the 5850. Unless they start putting crappy coolers or cheap them out someway I don't have much to say. These are usually reserved for lower end cards that they try to get even cheaper.

I've ownd XFX, Sapphire, EVGA (nvidia only), and probably some others in there.

That card has 128GB/s memory bandwidth with a 256bit memory interface

Is basically the same as all the others with a slightly faster memory speed of 4200 over the normal 4000

On some of the 5850 cards I have looked at in detail, they use memory that can in theory make 5000.

I was looking for the Black Edition and they are not avail anywhere. Also, that Amazon link shows it to be out of stock too. All the XFX Black Edition 5850's seem to be out of stock everywhere. Now today, NewEgg says its unavailable.

My thinking? I thinking maybe they are changing them. Fri the new Nvidia cards are supposed to be unveiled, so maybe XFX is unveiling something to compete with the Nvidia cards?

Why get the black edition? Paying someone else to overclock your video card(well short of its capabilities) is just a waste of money.

it was in stock when I posted it.. i kept checking every 2 hours and it was still available.. seems like someone snatched up the last one not too long ago..

Fermi comes in XFX flavor as well, one of the few companies that sells both NV and AMD cards =)

I dont know a thing about OC'ing. What card do you recommend I get? I perplexed now that all of XFX's 5850's have disappeared. I was gonna order all my components this weekend. I emailed NewEgg to see if they know why the 5850's are gone. I also tried emailing XFX.

Should I wait to see how FERMI pans out? Is XFX coming out with an updated version of the 5850?

Well, Fermi's paper launch is tomorrow. So I'd suggest waiting.

OCing to the speed of a black edition literally takes three seconds. In CCC: Unlock the card, enable clock control, max the sliders (775/1125) and you're done.

March 25, 2010 10:50:51 PM

So a basic 5850 would do? Does OC'ing void the warranty?

As long as you know what you are doing, no. If you don't know what you are doing then yes =)

Wait for Fermi, you will have more options and "maybe" better pricing ;)

OCing is very, very, very, very, very easy, you open up CCC (ATI Drivers), go to OverDrive, click the key, slide the sliders, click "Apply" or "OK".

I would recommend using rivatuner instead as CCC tends to place artificial limits on clock speeds, often well below what can be achieved. But yes, OCing a video card is really quite easy and safe.
The HD5850 specifically OCs an insane amount. The card allows for core voltage increases which people have used to get speeds between 1000-1100mhz which is a 40-50% OC.

Personally I think cards with better coolers & custom PCB's are better than XFX's "Black Edition" cards, XFX's 5850 crap has nothing on cards like the MSI Lightning right now.

There's 2 ways to classify cards that are the same, extras (games, coolers, PCB), and price, if you want a reference board only price matters.

Other than the MSI Lightning, what would you recommend? Any Nvidia card right now seems to be old technology as the Radeon 5000's are newer cards. I personally like to build systems that last a long time. I cant afford to upgrade every year or two.

You are definitely right that NVidia's old cards are nothing special right now. However, no harm in looking at their new cards ("released" tomorrow).

It all depends on how often a user replaces his GPU. Not everyone upgrades every 2 years, meaning if you have a 5850 and let’s say a year or two down the road you notice that you need a second 5850 (CF) you are better off acquiring a GPU that offers Lifetime warranty just to keep both cards safe. Now if you are the kind that gets rid of them on a 1 or 2 year basis then it wouldn’t matter.

Nothing worse than having a GPU die on you after the warranty is over, especially when you don’t have cash to burn.

And I am one that doesnt upgrade very often. My last upgrade was 5 years ago. Its starting to look like I have a week or two before I buy a card, so with the Fermi's supposedly coming out April 6th, I may wait to see what they look like, however I really like the Radeon's. I've had both Nvidia and Radeon cards in the past.

Amazon and a few other e-tailors are taking pre-orders that will ship the 470 and 480 by april the 6th. So no there is no delay unless you miss out on the pre-order.

Today is the paper launch, nobody said that they would be available for purchase. If you want a 470/480 you need to pre-order between today and tomorrow because chances are there won't be many in stock the day they launch. Just like the 5870 all over again, way too many people in line for this launch.

Look at THG's best graphics cards chart. At every single price point, you cannot find an Nvidia card that is worth it over an ATI card.

As of 26th March 2010, nothing has changed. There is no reason at all to get a 470 instead of a 5850, and the bad news for Nvidia is, even if the 470 was *cheaper* it would still be a worse buy.

Jenny you have no idea of what Fermi is capable of, we have the numbers, in some cases the 5850 will equal or better the 470 by a very small percentage and in other instances the 470 bests the 5870, yes I said 5870 (@ 1680x 1050) and here is proof ;

BC2 :

http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,743498/Geforce-GTX-4...

Dirt2 :

http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,743498/Geforce-GTX-4...

Here AMD prevails (Crysis) :

http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,743498/Geforce-GTX-4...

AMD gets pwned again (GTA4) :

http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,743498/Geforce-GTX-4...

pwned again... Mass Effect 2

http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,743498/Geforce-GTX-4...

So to sum it up, Fermi spanked both the 5850 and 5870 ;)

The 5850 has more bang for the buck, but you could argue that the 5770 has more, as you go up higher the performance/price becomes less.
