CPU or MOBO error?

Hey all,

I am running:
CPU: Phenom II X3 720 Black (2.8 GHz; Stepping C2)
Mobo: Gigabyte MA790GPT-UD3H.
ZALMAN CNPS 9700 NT 110mm CPU Cooler

RAMs:

2x2 GB Corsair XMS3 1333
4x2 Kingston HyperX 1600
2x4 G Skill Ripjaws 1600

Basically, I have been trying to get 2x4 G Skills to run at their rated 9-9-9-24-2T @ 1600 MHz. I have OCed the processor alone to 16.5x205 (~3300 MHz) at 1.4V. It has run this way with the Corsair 1333 RAM for about a year now. Memtest+ at 9-9-9-24 @ 1600 passed successfully.

A caveat, apparently, C2 stepping processors have an inferior integrated memory controller (IMC). They definitely prefer 2 DIMMs. Often, a 4 DIMM 1333 setup is barely managable in favor of a 4 DIMM 1066 setup. Some people have claimed that C2 cannot do 2x4 GB at 1600. I have seen many Newegg reviews saying that 2x2 GB at 1600 works.

In one attempt to clock the rams properly, I noticed an intermittent error with Core#2 when running Prime95. It went away if I reset RAM settings to default.

Most recently, I decided to go w/ the FSB method of overclocking. I took these steps:

1. I reset the board. Default values for FSB is 200, RAM is 1333.
2. I increased FSB to 210 and ran Prime95 for hours. No problem.
3. Increased FSB to 215. No problem.
4. Increased FSB to 220. No problem.
5. Increased FSB to 225. No problem w/ Prime95. Num Lock does not work on POST, but computer boots (multiple times) and runs quite well.

*If it helps, in all other cases, when my OC settings are too much, the Num Lock button will not work properly during POST.

Computer no longer starts after the most recent "sleep" command. It has booted 2x since the 225 test. Power on results in powered fans, lights on my NIC, audible hard drive booting, but nothing else. It does not POST nor does a CMOS reset work.

For those of you knowledgeable of these things - what's wrong? CPU? Mobo?

Thanks so much!

Thanks for your comment.

I guess I was unclear, those are 3 sets of RAM I tried one after another. I never mixed RAM.

The most recent event is the failure to POST at all; no amount of resetting is fixing anything right now. :(

I had reset everything to default before doing the FSB overclock. Default is 14x200 = 2.8 GHz.

So, when I OCed, I pushed CPU to 14x225 = 3150 MHz, well within the 3316 MHz I used to maintain (for CPU anyway)

My original test of running the CPU at 16.5x205 (3316 MHz) @ 1.4V and manually setting the G Skill 1600 RAM to 9-9-9-24 @ 1600 Did not work. Even the "Auto" settings, 11-11-11-29 @ 1600 did not work either :(

amusingly, memtest+ passed both 2 DIMM RAM configurations (2x2 Corsairs, and 2x4 G Skill) but not the 4 DIMM config (4x2 Kingston) at their rated speeds
