The best thing I ever did was build my new system with Windows 7 on my primary drive and install Ubuntu and a secondary partition. I would have liked to install Ubuntu on a secondary drive but I have only one at the present time. The process was smooth as silk although I admit I am used to configuring systems so the install for me was a breeze.
Don't be afraid to jump into Linux. The OS's are quite advanced now and easy to install. Don't let your lack of confidence stop you. Build smart and load your OS's smart and you wont fail.
