I cant download or run anything that has the exe following it what can I do?

I cant download or run anything with the .exe. suffix. I cant even open IE or anything that it has to do with. When I try to oipen anything ,even command prompt and event viewer, it puts up a view downloads page and says that the publisher of this program couldnt be verified. What canI do?

Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.

Follow this link to Doug Knox's fix for XP .exe problems and see if it works in your circumstance. It's designed to put the Registry back to the proper setting if malware has caused .exe files to fail but your case is a little different. It is, however, well worth a try and won't harm anything if it doesn't do the trick.

Go to http://www.dougknox.com and click on the XP Fixes link on the left hand side then on File Association Fixes in the middle pane. Again in the centre pane, you'll find Doug's EXE file fix - double click that and download it then click on it and allow it to modify your Registry to put this problem right.
