Need a upgrade from 8800gt

Hello,

I currently own the following spec machine:

Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 2.4ghz
4gb Ram
8800 GT

I recently bought Battle Field Bad Company 2 and noticed a major drop in fps. On medium settings I am getting around 20 making the game unplayable. Low settings just make the game look aweful.

My budget is around £130 and I have found a HIS 5770 1GB that I can afford. Will this make much of a difference from my 8800gt?

Also, does my CPU need updating? I can't really afford both however. If needed, I run games at a 1600 x 1050 resolution.

Thank you

Might be time to upgrade your GPU. If you have an SLI board, and decent PSU, you could add another 8800GT for SLI, but the 5770 will be a good upgrade from a single 8800GT. As for your CPU, it should be just fine if you overclock it.

Awesome. I would go dual 8800gt but they are hard to find. I can't really be bothered to flash it and get a 9800 either with all the hassle.

Ill grab a 5770 if there will be a significant jump then. I would get the 5830 but its just too far out of my budget.

Thank you

I had posted a similiar question from my 8800 GTS 512 on the home builders forum. The responses have been to just got to the 5850, but I am thinking that the 5770 would the best bang for my bucks for DOW 2, C&C, Starcraft etc.. games that I want to play.

My only reservation is I am getting a 24 inch monitor in the mail soon, and while I would like to play at highest resolution probably will need to play at 1680X1050.

I have ordered the 5770 for a bargain price of £128 + £9.99 next day delivery.

I understand what you are saying Bloodz. The only problem with "just get the 5850" is that it is "just" double the price heh. I don't really have the money to spend £260+ on a graphics card.

I will post back and let you know how things go. Thank you for your input.

Actually you can easily find another 8800GT on eBay for around $70. I went this route and am happy with my SLI system as is. I play at the same resolutions as you, 16x10 and get great frame rates in BC2.

Still going back and forth, but if I was going to pull the trigger on the 5850 should I wait till April? Will the prices actually go down enough?

Still waiting for it to be delivered. Hopefully it should arrive this afternoon. A side note, the reason why I have probably been getting low fps is my 8800gt is a 256mb model! That I did not know.

heh, speak of the devil it has just turned up on my door. I'll fit it in and let you know if there is any improvement.

Overpriced compared to what? It's possibly the best value on the market currently especially if you are willing to OC(it OCs to almost an absurd degree.)

This is just bad advice. The HD5770 should be pretty great for 1680x1050.

I have put in the 5770 and received a pleasant surprise. I can now play with around 70-80 fps on medium settings or around 40 on high. I know this isn't ground breaking but is a big difference between low=60, medium = 20, high = 10.

It's easy for people to say just get the 5850. I understand it would have been better but the fact is I just don't have the money to spend on it. For £120 I have got a card that will last me for another year or two. I may even look at getting another one in the future to SLI as that has proven to give good results on par with the 5850.

Than why don't you not post stupid stuff...? The benchmarks in that article show the HD5770(even without an OC) to be perfectly capable of playing the game at 1680x1050;

That's with everything maxed. Most people don't feel the need to max AA/AF/all settings in every game. If you are going to be giving advice based on insanely high standards which say the HD5770 is too weak for anything but 1280x1024 and below then you should explicitly state where you are coming from so people can ignore you if they don't want to spend twice as much on a video card just so they can use high levels of AA in the most intensive games.
