Im building a new system which will be together in the next week or two. Now that the reviews are out, what should I get? The 5850 or wait and buy the 470? Most reviews are showing the 470 as slightly faster but is it worth the price vs performance?

If you are building the system in the next week or two definitely get a 5850, the GTX 470 will likely be incredibly hard to get your hands on until the end of next month. The 470 isnt much better than the 5850 but it is more expensive and more power hungry, personally im not willing to pay an extra $50 for an extra 5%.

Thats kind of what Im thinking too. With the 5850's around $300, I havent seen impressive numbers by the 470 to justify the extra money for one.

That is an awesome price, but the reviews, although only 3, werent that good for that particular card.

Yeah, after some searching it seems the card isnt even listed on sapphires website so either its a very new card or newegg is clearing out its stock, the lack of reviews is interesting as well. Although the GSOD's have supposedly been fixed via a driver update a few weeks ago so those guys may have been using the known bugged drivers.

Otherwise a 5850 is going to run about 309-375 minus shipping, although that may change given the 470 gtx's edging out of this card.

It does look like they are edging out the 5850's, so should I wait and get the 470? I want to build a system that will last me several years

Really up to you, the 470 for all intents and purposes offers slightly higher performance for almost the same price as the 5850 at a cost of higher power consumption and a higher temp under max load. Both cards are the correct answer, and if it were me I would wait until the 470's start shipping, if nothing else to see if ATI responds with a price drop.

The GTX 470 is a Radeon 5850 with More heat, power usage and a higher price tag.

You make the choice.
