SLI using x16 and x8

I have a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 motherboard with 2 PCIe x16 and 1 PCIe x8 slots. I would like to run my 2 PNY nVidia GTS 250s in sli. Can I run one in the x16 slot and the other in the x8 slot in order to put some room between the cards for cooling purposes? When I have them in the x16 slots they are right next to each other and the one in the top slot gets extremely hot. Any other suggestions if I can't run one in the x8 slot?
