what to expect will the bios show or must there be a boot disk in the machine.

You don't need to have a hard drive installed in order to get into the BIOS.

As soon as you power on the BIOS will start looking for attached drives - if it cant find any it will prompt you to insert a boot disk. just before this pressing F1 or DEL (depending on mobo) will get you into BIOS
