9800 gt and 9600 gso in sli???

been out of the hardware reading for a while,
I was wondering if i could use these two cards together running sli and using the 9600 as the phyx card?? I know you need to use the same chips, are they the same chips but the 9600 just a tuned down version.. any help would be great

There are more than one version of the 9600GSO out there. All of them are crippled cores one way or the other which makes them unsuited to SLI with 9800GT.

nVidia has given each of their cards a certain number, and if those two numbers aren't right, then one can't SLI the cards.

When you use one of the cards as a dedicated physx card they do not need to match. If that is what you are asking then yes, you can use the 9600GSO as a physx card to go along with the 9600GT as your main card. For normal SLI it may be possible if your 9600GSO is of the 48 stream processor variety but I wouldn't recommend it even if that is the case.

ah i wasnt trying the run it as SLI but to use the 9600 as a physx card...
