Cheap fan filter

I am building a computer using a side windowed case, and I don't wanna spend 3.50 a pop on the 5 fan filters I need. The fans alone will set me back 30 dollars.

Most fan filters seem to be made out of a thin foam like material, If I went to a fabric store, bought some thin foam like material, cut it, and place in between the fan and the case, would that work?

Indeed, womens stockings/nylons make pretty good air filters and if your mother happens to have some that have a run in them so she cant wear them they turn into free air filters for you. Not quite reusable, but not nearly as expensive.
