Alright this is really scaring me...

I am using an aftermarket cooler that seemed to have nice reviews and would suit me fine.

I am overclocked to 3.4 Ghz but even at stock speeds, I have the exact same idle / work temperatures...

So I ask you, is this normal and why hasn't my computer asploded already, and what can I do to lower my temperatures?

Did you apply thermal paste properly? If the paste does not create a proper seal, temperatures are often significantly higher than they should be.

Do you have an example of what is the proper method?

Yes, your temperature is too high.

Your voltage is too high for stock. 1.328v is voltage that people use to typically overclock up to 3.8GHz or so. Normal stock voltages I've seen are around 1.26v or less.
