Power supply for 5970

Hey there, what is the lowest wattage power supply that should be used with a 5970 (for use with a X4 955 or i5-750, no overclocking). Is the Antec eartwatts 650W good enough?

  1. Yes it will be enough and the Antec earthwatts is a very reliable psu. You should have enough power for future upgrades as well.

    Yes-ish

According to the specs it has 3 12V rails, 22A, 22A and 25A. Amp to Wattage conversion states the 25A 12V3 rail would be exactly 300W.

The 5970 has a TDP of: HD 5970 (294W) usualy add 10% just for good measure and it puts a safe margin of 323W.

Although PCI 2.0 x16 slots are only rated at 300W.

So basically what Im saying is, your best 12V rail at max capacity would be adequate. Me personally thats too close for comfort, I'd find one with a 35-40A 12V rail, preferably a 12V rail that would be used exclusively for the 5970 and nothing else along it.
