Learning question .

Hi all , This is my on going pursuit of learning what kind of stuff make s good video card. Below is a copy and paste of some specs on a GPU. Out of the specs what makes the card better.Performance wise.

Core Clock: 765MHz
Stream Processors: 1440 Stream Processing Units
Effective Memory Clock: 1000MHz (4.0Gbps)

I know it all works together, but some have slower Stream Processing Units with higher core and memory clocks. And some are reversed.

  1. Your gonna have a hard time comparing ATi and nVidia cards as there architechture is very different, also your missing alot of important infomation, The easiest thing to do is read reviews that compare different cards.

Obviously all of those things you've listed are important, but don't think card "A" is better than card "B" because it has a higher Core and memory clock.

ATi cards usualy have more stream processors (SP's) that run at the same speed as the Core. Where as nVidia usualy have less SP's but are clocked alot higher.

    Your missing out

    ROP's
    Memory bandwidth
    Texture fill rate
    Memory size and type
    pixel fillrate

No doubt some other very important things.
  2. I hate this looking for a GPU . Thought it would be easer. I am ready to buy a card to replace my Gforce 240 but it seems that just when I think I have the right card , I read some thing bad )conflics, its weak bla,bla ,bla ) What is a guy to do ?
  3. tell us your budget and your system specs and we can help you choose a card
  4. Thanks.

    Budjet $250
    Alienware Aurora
    i7-975 xstream OC 3.8
    6 GB 1067 DDR3 its OC a little don't remember to what
    640 GB HD
    Gforce 1GB 240 (DON"T LIKE IT )
    PSU 875 watt
    Windows 7 64

I am looking to play FSX,MW2,BBC2 ect. I don't mind a little fan noise. I do OC with software like rivia tuner, EVBA precision ect. Might say simple OC. Warranty 2 years would be fine. Other upgrade latter a 1600 mhz DDR3 ram.

    Any other info ?
  5. If you saved another 30$ you could pick up a HD5850, otherwise your looking at a 5830 which isn't a great card, you'd be much better saving for a 5850.

Hmmm...you could buy a HD5770 now for roughly $160 and go crossfire later for performance close to a 5870.
  6. Yeah thats a great deal. I think thats your best option.
  7. Over at the egg the reviews are not as good as I would like to see. They talk of GSOD .

The problem has mostly been fixed with drivers. If not then you can manually increase the 2d clocks, and if that doesn't work an RMA usually clears things up.

    I wouldn't worry about it.
  9. Its meant to be completely fixed by 10.4 drivers. I personaly haven't had any such problem. Like AMW1011 said, don't worry about it.
  10. Got it ordered today. Should be here in a few days. Just want to say thanks for your help .
