I'm working on a project for possible book publication. Which do publishers
prefer -- film or digital? I am currently shooting Velvia, then having it
scanned and burned to a CD. I also have a Digital Rebel and prefer it. In fact,
I would like to sell the Digital Rebel and my EOS 7E, get a 20D and shoot
digital exclusively, but I am afraid to do so until I know what publishers
prefer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any publisher that can't handle digital will probably be out of
business soon so you can go with either as you prefer.

Most publishers are all digital now and prefer it. There are still a few
holdouts, but even these seem to be impressed by the digital backs available
for medium format cameras. As dSLRs are now in the same MP range (the best
of them anyways) these may change soon. Contact the publishers who have used
your work in the past and ask them. I deal mostly with newspapers, who have
all gone digital, and local regional magazines, who take both.

Quality wise...almost any digital camera will manage quarter and half page
photos for glossy mags. Full page may still require the best of the dSLRs.
The 20D should be able to please anybody but Playboy for the centerfold and
Arizona Highways...the two that I know of that take only film. I think I
read where AH may take digital from a medium format. Last I heard...and its
been years...Playboy is still shooting 8x10 film for the centerfold.

Of course...I could be all wrong. These are facts and impressions gathered
over several years and they are changing constantly ...as are our cameras.

Ask the publishers. What publishers are you going to attempt sell the book to?
If you're working on the project, you should already have a book contract;
basic rule of writing is to sell the articles and books (and illustrations)
BEFORE you write them. To do that, you need to query publishers. And most of
their web sites will tell you what they accept (some of them don't keep the web
sites up to date, claiming to want only MF or similar, while accepting digital
and 35mm from many sources).

If you have trouble finding book publishers, google for Writer's Market.
Subscribe or buy the book (on-line is better). WM isn't laid out beautifully,
and their search function is a bit weird, but they're the only game in town
when it comes to listing book publishers with any accuracy and completeness.

George,

Go toe a bookstore and buy a current "Writer's Handbook" -- published
new each year, so get the 2005 issue.

It should provide such info for a range of publishers and publications.
Some will NOT accept digital at this point -- or at least last time I
looked.

New Mexico Magazine is another that will take only film, or that's what they
report in "Writers' Market."

Many publishers are now accepting digital. Talk to their production staff.
Editors are not always the best sources for good information on topics such
as these.

In my experience, "Writers' Market" entries are directed at beginning
writers. Many of them falsely say that the magazine won't take "photocopied
submissions" when in fact nearly everything they get on paper has been
Xeroxed.

I'll bet what they really mean is "we don't take 0.5-megapixel images from
cheap point-and-shoots."
