PCI 2.0 Card in 1.0 x16 Slot

I am contemplating on buying a high end GPU for my system.

My system is pretty old, it has a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ overclocked to about ~3.0ghz.
3GB of DDR2 RAM.
8600GTS Nvidia GPU.
Windows 7.

I want to upgrade the GPU for better frame rates on things such as CoD4, and hopefully Bad Company 2 which I am planning to purchase.

I was wondering if buying a high end card such as the HD Radeon 5970 would be advisable, because of the PCI 1.0 port limiting it's throughput, and maybe my CPU/RAM speed bottleneck.

Do you think my current system will hamper the true potential of the card? In which case, I would be better off with something like a 9800GTX+?

the pci express port will be fine you'll only lose a few fps between 1.0 and 2.0

you may have an issue with the cpu keeping up though

So do you think that 9800GTX+ would be a good choice?

Or does anyone have any other card they would recommend for this rig?

the 5970 is overkill but I'm really not sure how much of a card you can run with that cpu, hopefully someone with a little more insight into that area will come up with a suggestion for you

I think a 5850 would be more suitable for that setup, depending on what your monitor resolution is...it would be fine for 1680 by 1050.

5850 would be kinda overkill as well, something like a 5770 would probably be more balanced.

But if you can afford spending 700 on a 5970, then you could upgrade go for a cheaper card and uprade the rest of your compy as well, no?

Well, my old AM2 socket is pretty much maxed out.

All RAM slots filled.

GPU is really only thing I would want to upgrade :-/

Ok, well, you are using DDR2 ram, right?

You could go for an AM2+ MB, reuse your old ram, get a phenom II 955 and an HD5850/5870....
That would do more for your system than only getting a 5970 and it would be cheaper as well..
