My buddy's power supply died a bit ago, he came to me asking about a new one. I told him just to pick up a 550 watt antec as I've always had good luck with them.. but he's not sure if that would be enough.

His rig:
Amd 6000+
Geforce 8800gt
APPARENTLY FIVE HARD DRIVES
1.5tb
2tb
400gb
300gb
36gb wd raptor
5-6 case fans he says.
4 1 gig sticks of ram

What are your thoughts?

I'd start here.

Usually the biggest draw will be the graphics card on that 12v rail.

I don't think the 550 should have a problem with that build.
