Hey all. I have a quick question. I want to setup Setup a SSD as my boot and application drive and 2x 1T HDD 6gb/s in raid 0. The controllers on the motherboard are:

Storage Intel® X79 chipset :
2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), white
4 x SATA 3Gb/s port(s), blue
Support Raid 0, 1, 5, 10
Marvell® PCIe 9128 controller :
2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), white
ASMedia® ASM1061 controller :
2 x Power eSATA 6Gb/s port(s), green

What are your recommendation for where to put the raid: on the Marvell or x79. All my drives are 6gb/s.

Thank you.

Your HDDs are not even fast enough for SATA 3GB. So plug the HDDs and set up your RAID array here.

Take advantage of the speed of the SATA 6GB by plugging your SSDs into either one of these controllers (I run mine off the Intel 6GB in the ports closest to the RAM slots). Both the Intel or the Marvel work well.

The Asmedia controller is for the E-SATA ports off the back.

I am building a video editing rig. The two HDD would be for data. Thank you.

Yes. The regular HDDs will go into the blue 3GB SATA II ports. Also, plug your DVD/combo drive into one of these blue ports.

You'll plug the SSD into a white Intel 6GB SATA III port (closest to the RAM slots).

On my X79-Deluxe, I put the SSD on the Intel 6GB port, leaving the second open (Samsung 840 EVO 1TB) if I want to go Raid 0 later. I am happy with the speed (SeqRead 1114, Seq Write 898, Random Read 77316, Random Write 54422). Random timings were actually faster before I enabled rapid mode, but Seq much faster with it.

My Raptor's I put on the Marvel controller, all 6gb Sata, as raid 0 (SeqRead 357, Seq Write 379, Random Read 3420, Random Write 3610).

I used Intel 3gb sata for my Blue Ray, and tried to get a second drive to work there also (an old 150GB raptor. Never could initialize it though Windows 8.1 does see it.)

My Acronis backup disk, a 2 TB WD, is on the Asmedia 6gb port, with the second one open. (Seq Read 119, Seq Write 110, Random Read 521, Random Write 690). I also tried to put a Seagate 4tb drive on that second open Asmedia port, and again Windows would not initialize it.
