Upgrading CPU in a DFI LP 790FX DK

I've been looking at replacing my CPU. Currently I'm running a AMD Athlon X2 5000+ Black Edition with an ULTRA Chiltec Thermo electric cooler. I wanted to bump up to something with 4 cores. I can Support and find AM2+ CPU's but, I've read and heard about the board being able to support AM3 CPU's with a quick bios update, and was wondering if anyone had any information on such? Assuming I can't run an AM3 CPU I'm looking into http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-471-_-Product

More about upgrading 790fx
  1. I would email or call DFI on your board first to find a bios update for the newer cpu. You'll need to flash the bios anyway with the old cpu first before installing the new one. They might even email you a bios file to flash. I don't see your board model on their website. No point in guessing about the cpu.
  2. I'm sorry for the confusion since I have given some misinformation and what board it is I'm using. LANPARTY DK 790FX-M2RS, This board is listed on the website.
  3. Hi and welcome to Tom's forum.

You can see the CPU support list for your mobo, http://www.dfi.com.tw/portal/CM/cmproduct/XX_cmproddetail/XX_WbProdsWindow?action=e&windowstate=normal&mode=view and support AM3 CPUs until Phenom II X4 955 C3 Revision, but you need update the BIOS version before install the new CPU.
