I am looking to buy a lens - a Nikon zoom - and the cheapest place to
get one seems to be on e-bay from Hong Kong. However, I'm a bit wary of
parting with a load of cash for something sent on trust from someone at
the far side of the world. So I wonder if people have experience of
this type of transaction and can advise what to watch out for?
Any recommended sellers? Problems with fake items? Problems with import duty?

I've had cheap items through eBay from Hong Kong before (mobile phone data
leads etc.), but I'd be reluctant to buy anything expensive through eBay -
the protection offered if anything goes wrong is laughable to say the least.

There are escrow services that will hold the money in trust until you have
received the merchandise in good order. A reputable seller will understand
your concerns, and will be willing to use such a process.

Personally I wouldn't touch any seller from Hong Kong or Taiwan. Ebay is
entirely risky and totally open to fraudsters and I doubt I'm far from the
mark in asserting that the riskiest of all are those from those two places.
FWIW,
Fi.

I've done a number of small (< $200) transactions with HK eBay sellers.
They were all prompt and dependable. It would take important advantages
to get me to go for much more than that.

I personally wouldn't trust a mail order business relationship from ANY
country other than MY own, unless the company is well proven and has a good
reputation. Ever heard of the Nigerian scam or being scammed by Russians.
Not that these people or others are any worse than others, but they operate
with impunity when scamming people from other countries. They can easily
set up a mail order company and scam you with it. Stick to the tried and
proven when dealing with items of substantial worth. And if a Nigerian
offers to share $20M with you for the simple favor of your moving his $50M
into your bank account, think about the last time someone tried to give you
$20M.

I've bought several high value items from "Kea-Photo" based in Hong Kong
with no problems whatsoever. (I'm in the uk). The only, ONLY, time i've been
ripped off EVER in four years of trading on ebay was from some tosser in New
York. However as I paid him via paypal I managed to get my money back via
paypals complaints service.
