Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.

Go from Start to Control Panel then Sounds and Audio Devices and in the Volume tab, tick to "Show a volume icon in the Taskbar, click Apply and OK. You will then see a small grey speaker icon in the bottom right hand side of the screen - double click on that and you can vary the volume or mute it completely.
