Does anyone have any sound ideas on what I can replace my o/s with? The
harddrive needs reformatting badly & the original Win98 SE disk can not be
found. I do have access to Win 95,98,ME,2k pro & XP pro. But all of them
are for desktops.I checked out the min. requirements needed for Win 2k and
my Satelite 1625CDT meets them, but I'm not finding anything on the Toshiba
web site that says it will work.Solid suggestions needed on what will and
what won't work, thanks in advance.

Everything will work. I never heard of a different version of Windows
for desktops only or for laptops only. A PC is a PC, regardless of the
shape.
The most important thing to realize is that the newer the OS, the more
RAM and (less important) the more HD-space is required.
I installed WinXP pro on my S1730 with 64MB Ram and it turned into an
excruciatingly slow machine. I put 128MB extra in the slot (the maximum
for my model) and with 192MB RAM it does a reasonable job. Remember that
thjis old S0DIMM can be expensive.
Bare minimum RAM requirements for XP is 128MB really, and don't expect
too much. It will work though; there's no code in it preventing it to
run on your system.
If you have 32MB or 64MB, and don't want (or are not able to) upgrade
RAM, I would install Win98. You can still update 98 very well, as it's
still supported. WinMe is the most useless windows release this world
has ever seen. Donate the CD to the local bonfire (and complain
afterwards with Microsoft that their CD-Roms sdon't burn properly).
If you can attain enough RAM, go for XP instead of Win2K. Guessing from
your message you're not really into deep computing but just want it
to work quick and stable, and XP (if you have pro, why not) is easier in
that regard - especially in installing. Install - run.

The only choices I would consider are 98SE and XP (not sure if XP will
run). There is no difference between a "laptop OS" and a "desktop OS",
but for any computer (laptop or desktop), you need the appropriate
drivers, and there are a few more of them, in most cases, for a laptop.
There's no way to know if XP will work without trying it. You need to
find all of the drivers (many maybe built-in), you need a minimum of
about 192k of memory, and you need a minimum of about a 300 MHz Pentium
II CPU.
