Hi - After many years using film I have recently moved to digital and
bought myself a Canon Eos D20.
I understand that to achieve optimum quality I need to shoot images in
RAW format and open them up on editing software to process them. At
this point I'd appreciate some help as although I have taken several
images in RAW + JPEG format I'm not clear as to how to open the RAW
Images.
When I connect the camera to the PC I download the Images using XP
which are listed as the JPEG Images. I have the Canon software Eos
viewer,Digital Photo professional, as well as Adobe elements 2.0 and
Photoshop ver 5.0.
Basically what i'm trying to achieve is the the best possible image
ready for printing and am not too concerned about file size etc at this
stage.
How do I access the RAW Images from the camera what steps do I then
take to achieve best possible results ?
Sorry if this is basic stuff for some but after using Fuji Velvia for
so many years RAW & TIFF etc is all new to me.
Your help is appreciated - Eos

Just copy the RAW files to a directory from your CF card (good idea to have a
directory called "raw archives" or similar and keep all of the RAW files
together so you can back them up easily), open DPP and double-click one of the
RAW files to open it and start processing.

Adjust to taste and convert to a tiff, then open in Photoshop ... if you had
Photoshop CS I'd suggest the book "Camera RAW with Adobe Photoshop CS" since
there are edits that are better done in the RAW converter and edits that are
better done in Photoshop and this book explains why very well.

The DPP manual explains how to make the basic edits with DPP but many/most
people prefer other RAW converters like BreezeBrowser or Photoshop CS or Phase
One Capture One LE.

Hi - Thanks for the Info but I still have one very basic question - how
do I download the RAW Images from the camera to the PC ?
I have created a folder as you suggest and notice that the DPP software
allows you to view images only and then judging by the Icons perhaps
make some basic adjustments to the Image.
The JPEG Images taken are downloaded quite easily using XP but to date
I have not read how to to transfer the RAW images from camera to PC in
the first instance.
I assume this is possible with the parts supplied with camera and
without the need of a card reader etc ?
I'm not sure at this stage wether Photoshop 5.0 is Ok for editing the
files but if so is it best to save the file as a Tiff File as a local
printing company has previously told me it is easier for them to save
my images on Disk as JPEGS.
I will be saving the files on Disk and getting them printed elsewhere
at this stage but am unsure what the preferred format is to allow the
best possible print. I was assuming that most digital printing
companies could handle Tiff images presented on Disk.
Thanks for your help it is much appreciated.

The three Canon dSLRs I've used came with a cable which allows you to connect
directly from the camera to the PC. I've never done it that way, but that
option is there for you. It's explained in the manual.

What I do is transfer via a USB card reader (which you'll need to buy
separately, I think $20 or so should get you a good USB 2 model) ... just
connect the card reader to the PC USB port, pop the card from the camera and
insert into the reader and it will look like a removeable disk.

Most of the print shops want a jpeg in sRGB space, unless you are going to get
large prints made from an expensive Chromira or LightJet or similar, in which
case they'll want 8 bit tiffs in AdobeRGB space. Ask the printer, but if it's
a Costco or Wal-mart type place odds are they want jpegs.

The EOS Viewer should be able to see your 20D when you plug it in to your
USB port using the instructions that came with the camera. From there just
drag the photos that you want to work with to a folder on your hard drive.
I create a folder called Raw Images for Processing, or something similar.
From there you can see the images in that folder with the Digital Photo
Professional software. Optionally you may just want to invest in a USB 2
card reader. They don't cost very much and look to your computer like
another hard drive. That way you just take the compact flash card from your
camera and put it into the card reader - from there you can copy the CR2
files to your hard drive.
