reinstall of windows

I am building a new computer, and i just bought windows xp upgrade for my old system, my question is i know have a compaq athlon 1.0ghz, can i use the compaq system disk that has windows me on it to install windows on the new computer, then i can use the xp upgrade. Please help, if i cant what can i do. Thanks

Probably not - the Compaq restore disc is probably specific to the their own computers.

Microsoft may have changed this with XP, but normally with an upgrade all you have to do is prove that you had windows on before, either by putting in a Win95/98/me cd or it searches the Harddrive for c:\windows\win.com If you make a 0 byte win.com file, Windows XP "may" install. Works great with 95 and 98. Hope this helps.
