I've just installed a Toshiba SD-R2212 combo drive in my Toshiba
Satellite Pro 2100 (Win XP SP2) and after boot up I get the message
"IDE#1 error" and then the computer boots up OK but there is no drive
visible in the device manager and the drive door wont open. Is it
lacking a driver or is there some other problem?

There's another problem.
This has been covered in exhaustive detail in this newsgroup a few
months back. The problem is that the drive is set for cable select and
needs to be forced to master or slave (don't remember which). The bad
news is that while the fix is known, you probably can't make it yourself
(it requires soldering a bridge between two pins only .02 inches apart,
surrounded by other pins only .02 inches apart).

Sounds like a hardware problem if the door won't open. Do any of the
drive lights flash when the computer powers up? Are you sure this
drive is compatible with your laptop?

The drive light doesn't come on when I start up, after the initial 'IDE#1
error' there's no sign of it on the system.
I'm not sure about the compatibility issue, I did a bit of research on this
before I bought it but I couldn't find anywhere that lists drive
compatibility not even on Toshiba's many sites, I got the impression that
all Toshiba slimline combo drives would work with my machine.
