Computer making a dementing noise!

Hi,

So my computer sounds as if a supersonic jet is taking off. The only difference is that it keeps on going all the time and is driving me absolutely mad. So the specs are :


Dell dimension 1100

OS - XP pro sp3
Pentium 4, 2.8 GHZ
2GB RAM
80 GB hdd


Originally the cpu was celeron and had only 512mb of RAM. So the big question is what can i do to shut it up? Moreover i noticed recently that youtube videos (or any streaming media) doesnt work either!

The noise is likely your fans having to go mental to keep the cpu cool, clean out the inside of your case and pay attention to the heatsink for fluff accumulation.
if you changed the processor, did you change the thermal paste on it and apply new paste b4 putting the new chip in? list mobo model number and other specs and we can try to help you, although I'm thinking it may be time for your old penty to go out to graze :)

Hi moto,

I did clean the insides of the case many times. However when i upgraded the processor, i didnt apply any new paste on it. Does it make matter?

The motherboard model is : Intel Springdale-G i865G(V) and i'm not sure what other specs u need mate so i'm just attaching a report that was created with some freeware (see spoiler)

Yea i see what you mean about buying a new one. I actually do intend to so do (a core i7 one) very soon. However i want to give this to my parents and dont want it so sound like a firealarm going off all the time. So i'll make a few upgrades to 'quiten it down' and then buy a brand new beast for myself!

but yes, if you didnt clean off old thermal paste and apply new, follow this list:
DO NOT TURN PC ON! :p  everytime you do, you risk frying it, if you havent already? it still works right?
Check out some threads on here about cleaning off/applying thermal paste
go to store and buy new thermal compound and paste cleaner (if they have it) as well,
Clean old gunk off processor and heatsink base using a proper brand cleaner, all of it, and any thats leaked on the socket/mobo, carefully
watch 10+ videos on youtube on how to apply thermal paste, I say 10+ so you get a good average idea of things, not just one persons view.
Read your new thermal paste instructions, read them again,
understand what exactly it is your putting on your chip, some pastes are conductive,some arent, some have massive curing times in which they dont cool at maximum efficiency, some have a very small time find out what properties your new paste has, then read the instructions again.
Get everything to hand and ready before you begin.
go slow and take it easy, only apply as much paste as you need to, dont think you can slap loads on and it wont make a difference, too much can be worse than not enough
one good thing is you get the experience of learning this now, before you toast your brand new i7 and get really angry at yourself :p 


Now, all the advice I've given you about applying new paste is what I've learned from threads here on Toms and watching videos, I've never applied paste myself and wont pretend to have, but I would be happy to do it knowing I've learned enough to see me right, before you try, please do as I recommend, read up/watch the vids, and I reckon once you sort your paste out, your original problem may well disappear,

I would recommend using one of the brand name pastes like arctic silver or similar, dont use cheap pastes cause you really do want to pay for the quality here, google thermal pastes and find some named brands :)

Other than watching some vids and reading up some, nope :) 
Arctic silver is a conductive paste by the way, you must be very very careful not to get any excess paste anywhere other than on top of the cpu,
Make sure your heatsink base and cpu top are clean and free from old paste,
apart from that, have fun and enjoy the learning experience, glad to have been of some help man,
