Single slot? All gaming GPUs are at least dual slot cards.

The GTX480 and the 5970 are both dual slot GPUs.

The fastest graphics card is the 5970. It is about 40% faster than the GTX480.

The fastest single-GPU card is the GTX480.

The card fits in one PCI-e slot and will block the next slot below it (usually a normal pci slot). If that is to much for your current setup. You need to be looking for 9800gt http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

But in any case it is time that you tell us what CPU you have then we can find the fastest single slot GPU to match.

Your best bet would be a GTS250 with a aftermarket cooler that does not cover the whole card although it is not a huge upgrade from your 9800GT. The other option would be get a cheap AM2+/AM3 motherboard (reuse all your other hardware) and a HD5770 or GTX260 or even wait for some GTX3xx to come out any thing more powerful would be held back by your current CPU. Later on you can then upgrade to a new AMD X4

4850. The 5750 might come in as single slot card. Either option should be better then the GTS250.

Quote:
the GTX 480 uses around 483 watts at full load.

How do you figure rndmavis? Its impossible for the card to consume that much power.

He is confusing the power used by the card with the one used by the whole system.
