Low profile graphics card

Will a Nvidia GeForce 8500 graphics card run on 250 watts? We are trying to play second life and will need a recommended card of 8500, but we only have a 250 watt computer bought in 9/2009. It is a slim tower so we will need a low profile card. Is this doable and if so, where would we find a card?

  2. Get an HD5570. It's very small, runs on very low power, and offers good performance (much better than an 8500GT).
  3. Depends on the quality of the PSU. As shadow said though, you are better off with an HD 5570
  4. Barring any major overclocking of the CPU in the system and a ton of other 12V-dependent devices, the best performing low-power and low-profile video card is the ATI 5570, followed by the 4650.

There are 9800GT and 9600GT low-profile cards available, and they would outperform these cards, but they also require the use of a PCIe 6-pin power cable, which most sub-300W power supplies lack.

My personal recommendation would be the HD 5570 or 4650, depending on your budget. If you're in the US, Newegg.com and many other online PC component e-tailers sell them.

These are Newegg's 5570's. Mind you, only 6 of the 9 are low-profile. (The XFX, Gigabyte, and bottom PowerColor are not)

    And here is a low-profile 4650.

  5. There's a low-profile 9800GT ECO, but since they've massively reduced the core/mem clocks to achieve low-power, it's equal to an 9600GT.

yes, its not very graphic demanding
  8. Yup- a 5570 would be your best bet. Should handle second life just fine, and will not overly stress your PSU.

Can play NFS Shift or PES 2010 if using Ati 5570?
