Hey guys,
first time posting, and I'm ready to throw my copy of XP out the window.
Anyway, I've got a Linksys 4 port hub and two pc's (both running xp home). Both computers can get on the internet with no problem, however, I'm having an incredibly frustrating time enabling file sharing between the two systems.
I've run the network setup wizard on both systems. I made sure that I kept the workgroup name the same for both systems (obviously the computer names are different though).
After rebooting both systems, I checked the "Network Connections" section of the control panel. System "A" shows Local Area Connection and Network Bridge. System "B" shows only Local Area Connection.
I then went into My Network Places and checked out the workgroup that I had just created on both systems. Unfortunately I can only see the computer that I'm currently using when I check it.
Then I tried adding a network place using the wizard but it could only find the local computer that I'm on.
I'm at the point of utter frustration because I do tech support for a living but am too stupid to figure out a simple network configuration. I called Linksys and they referred me to their misleadingly named "knowledge" base. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I will be checking this thread often if there are any other questions about my configuration/specs.
Can you give a little more info about your network setup. Such as, do you have a router? or is internet being shared from one comp to the other?
One thing I recommend is avoiding that network setup wizard when ever possible. It usually does more harm than good. Try going through and setting everything manually on each machine. The network setup wizard likes to turn on the firewall and make bridges (as u have seen). Unless you have a definate purpose for those bridges get rid of them, they break things.
I am suffering from a similar problem too. I have a desktop computer and a laptop networked thru a Buffalo wireless router. I'm hardwired into the system and my wife's wireless (wireless chip embedded. SWEEEET
I didn't set up the two thru the network setup wizard because in the past I've had nothing but trouble with it(now with sp2 they have a wireless wizard but I still don't trust the damn thing). So anyway, I'm trying to share pictures with my wife but I don't know
how to link my wife's computer to mine. When I try to add a network place I can't figure out how to add my wife's computer name to My Network Places. Do I really have to go thru that whole BS home network wizard if all I really want to do is share some files? Also, regarding printer sharing, I've heard of some MS exploits regarding buffer overruns. Has anyone got any suggestions about protective measures I might be able to take to protect my computer? We are both running win xp home with sp2.
Again, I really want to stay away from any network wizards at all costs. You're right, they do tend to screw everything up. Thanks

Interesting. I read somewhere in these forums that a command prompt could not do some of the things a dos prompt can do. Anyway, I entered what you told me but I got an error message(sorry I'm away from my computer right now but I'll check it later). Is there any truth to that statement ?

Have you made a share on your computer that all the pictures are in? Right click on the folder containing the pictures > choose sharing and security > click the agreement link if it is there or check the box to share the folder (simple sharing must be on to see those) > click ok. Turn on your computer's guest account.
Once you do that try this from the other computer:
go to start>run>type in \\(computername)\(sharename)
I don't know of any exploits regarding printer sharing or how that would even be possible. Don't worry about it, just share the printer
