1920x1080 res for 4870HD

I wasn't sure exactly what forum this belonged in, so i put it here.

Hi, i've recently upgraded my computer monitor from a 19" Element LCD monitor to a Samsung P2570HD LCD monitor. Back on my Element monitor, i was running at its max resolution (1440x900). Now with this monitor, it says its capable of 1920x1080, but when i change the desktop resolution to 1920x1080 or 1776x1000, it becomes really fuzzy and just...not smooth. I can't seem to get it to go above 1680x1050.

I'm using a DVI to HDMI cable with an ATI Radeon HD 4870 512 MB.
The DVI side is in the video card while HDMI is in the computer.

Other system specs:

Windows 7
AMD 955 Quad Core Processor
4 g DDR3 1600mhz ram

I can list any other specs that may be needed.

I appreciate any help =]

Did you install the driver for your monitor?

Yes, i've installed the later SyncMaster driver and restarted my computer. It doesn't seem to help.

I can set to 1920x1080 on games in Full Screen mode like Starcraft 2 Beta, but the desktop just doesn't work well.

did you make sure the overscan is off in the video card drivers

i tried messing with the overscan/underscan in Catalyst control center, but it did nothing for me.
