Windows xp service pack 3

Hello,
I've just updated to service pack 3 on Windows XP and now both skype and google chrome will not start. I click on them and computer briefly shows the loading symbol before stopping and neither programm will load.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but no luck. Can anyone help?

XP SP3 has caused me numerous problems. First, tell me how you upgraded to SP3. Did you download it and burn it to a disk? Let me know where, or what link that was that you downloaded it from.
Next, I would check the Windows System Logs to see if there were any critical errors, during SP3 installation.
Also, were you hooked up to the internet, during installation?

I must have been lucky to have installed SP3 on over 500 systems with never a problem, even when it was in Beta. Are any other programmes - or to be precise .exe files - working properly?
