Will my power supply do the job

Hi,

I am new to the forum.
I am building a new rig:
CoolMaster HAF 932 case
Asus P6X58D Premium
Intel i7 960 or 975 cpu
Prolima Tech Megahalems cpu cooler
ddr3 1333 or 1600 6 to 12 GB memory
Radeon 5870 video card
Asus Xonar Essence STX audio card
two internal optical drives
350 + 750 SATA-3 hdd
Dell U2711 or NEC equivalent monitor

I have 2 questions. 1. will my PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750(red) power supply be able to do the job +? 2. If i replace the 240mm side fan in the case with 3 or 4 120mm will the noise increase be noticeable to the average person? I do not have super sensitive hearing.

BTW outstanding advice and guidance on the Tom's Hardware forums.

Thanks and BE WELL,

newmoon

  1. If they are good quality fans then you may not notice the difference, but in general larger is more quiet.

A 750 PSU should deal with anything less than XFire.

I am assuming cost is not a big issue so I guess it doesn't matter, but what are you doing to need 8-12 gig of RAM?

A lot of formula development and calculations while i watch videos, play games, etc.
Been blessed with some unexpected cash and choose to use my portion on a new rig.

  4. A good 550 watt PSU, such as a Corsair 550VX (41 amp 12 volt rail):

    will run your system.

So, certainly, a good 750 will.
  5. why an i7 975?

basically to somewhat future proof the system. Could just as easily go with a 930 or 960 and save the bucks.
  7. Ithought the i7 980 was around the same price and much faster is that right?
  8. @OP:

    1. That PCP&C 750w will do based on your setup.
    2. Why change the fan anyway? Of course, 4 120mm would create more noise than a single 240mm running on low.
    3. I think 6gb is already plenty of RAM. No need to go beyond that for now. I suggest you spend your money on a good SSD instead which would make a whole lot of difference in your system.
