Computer freezes when i open exernal hard drive

i have a 1 terabyte drive connected to a usb 2.0 port thats pretty full, just checked and its got about 200gb free. whenever i open it up my computer will work fine for a few seconds but will then slow to a complete crawl. i check the physical memory usage and its being completely eaten up by something. after i close out of the drive the physical memory will drop back down to normal after a few seconds and everything will work normally again. why is this happening and is there any way i can fix it?

Check your drive for viruses!

no viruses. and it doesnt happen every single time. it happens just enough to be annoying
