Does anyone have a recommendation for an external DVD burner for my
Sony Vaio GRT150 laptop? It came with a DVD read/CD burner combo drive.

Thanks, jimbo

I've had good luck with the HP DVD200e (FW & USB, DVD+R), but there are
newer models out there.

I'd get a Pioneer A07/107 or A08/108 desktop drive and an external USB
2.0 case to mount it in. This can be done for under $100.

Thanks for your reply. Excuse my ignorance, but isn't the Pioneer 108
a PCI card? Maybe I just don't know what an "external USB case" is.
Can you give me a reference?

Thanks, jimbo

The 107 and 108 is OEM.

I have the DVR-A07XLB(black) and so far its a excellent drive. Now if you
could get the A08/USB (super fast 16X) combo for $100US I would jump on it
right now.

Well, the 107 appears to have a USB interface, but the 108 appears to
have an IDE interface. Barry talked about an external case that the
108 would fit in that had a USB interface. That is what I need some
advice about.

Thanks, jimbo

OK, second look. I have found a couple of places that bundle a
Panasonic DVR-107 with an external case with an IDE interface for the
DVR-107 and a USB interface for the computer. The same thing could be
done for the DVR-108. But, the external case is what I need some help on.

By the way, I have a DVR-108 on order, shipped 9/22 and scheduled for
delivery 9/27 from a place called BuyPana, $79.58 including shipping.
I had been planning on installing it internally, but the external case
option gives more flexibility.

Pioneer DVD drives (IDE computer drives) are number either with a number
like "A05, A06, A07, A08" or "105, 106, 107, 108", the difference being
Pioneer branded vs. OEM unbranded drives (the "A" series and the "1"
series are the same actual hardware).

An external USB case is a case that you can put an IDE drive (of any
type, generally) into. Do a search on E-Bay for USB External case"

No, the Pioneer drives themselves are bare drives that are ALL IDE
devices. I don't know what you are looking at, but if it has a USB
interface, then it's more than a bare drive.
