This is on a HP m8200n desk top w/ Athlon 64x2 dual core 6000+, 3 GB memory, GeForce 6150SE on board graphics.
About 3 month ago I added a GeForce 8600GT Graphics Bd. & 500W power supply. This worked great for about 2
months , suddenly display went 4" square then went black. Tried new GeForce 8400GS bd., no help. Pulled add on,
and it runs fine on the on board Graphics. Then replaced DVI cable from computer to monitor, reinstalled the 8600GT
bd.,everything worked fine again until a couple of days ago and then screen went black again. Tried a new DVI cable
and the 8400 bd., again but no success. Removed add on bd. and machine works great. Any ideas? This from 2/26/10
Since then I tried a new OEM motherboard which had been suggested but no change. Stumped, need help!

What do you mean by 8600 GT and 8400 bd, you can't mix two different boards in SLI. Does the second board work by itself?

Sorry ,I guess I didn't explain correctly. I tried both of these boards separately, the mobo only has one slot for an add on graphics bd. I hope this helps,
thanks for responding.

Try using VGA, see if that helps. Your monitor's DVI might be going bad or something...I don't even know if that's possible.

Thanks for responding Shadow, 2 different monitors work with the onboard graphics bd.and the VGA output. When I plug in either add on graphics
bd., the screen is black. Mystery!

so the on board works but the video cards (both the 8600GT & 8400GS) don't

is there an option in the BIOS to turn off the on-board graphics?

He already got th 8600 working for two months, pbi go to the mobo and try to clear teh CMOS by using jumpers or taking out the cell battery for 10 seconds.

Cleared CMOS, no difference. Then checked both outputs from the 8600 bd to VGA input on HP 22" monitor with a DVI to VGA adapter. This worked!
Reconnected to monitors' DVI input and it worked for an hour then went black. Moving connector around caused display to go on and off. Tried another
DVI cable , same problem, works for awhile then goes out. Apparently an internal problem with DVI input on monitor. It's the intermittant problems
that make you pull your hair out. Call me baldy! Looks like problem solved guys, thanks for all the help.
