As reliability trumps performance, and there has been much concern regarding the changes in the HDD industry (e.g., mergers and acquisitions) over the past year:

1) Which tests should one run on a new HDD -- right out of the box, more or less -- to assure that it is working correctly and up to specs, and;

2) Are there any tests that can be run to torture the drive, so to speak, so that if it is going to fail, one can reasonably get it to fail in the first two weeks or so, as opposed to right after the retailer's 14/30/60 day warranty period?
