I have a dual-boot Dell Inspiron 530 with Vista and XP. The two DVD-CDROM drives have been working on both systems, but recently the XP system does not see them -- gives the triangle-exclamation point for both drives and error 39. I can't identify this change with anything done I have done to the computer recently. Can you help me? Are there 2 places in the registry where the DVD-CDROMs are addressed in a dual-boot setup?

The problem is caused by updates. It corrupts the registry and makes the drives disappear. Has happened to many many systems.
There is no stand alone drivers. The drivers are loaded when the OS is loaded.
This makes it difficult to replace to corrupted drivers...

Also, the drivers can be recovered by reloading XP in "repair" mode.
This does not erase the programs or personal files...
However if doing this, turn updates OFF.
The updates will corrupt the drivers AGAIN if you leave the updates turned on.
I know the problem...
