It's generally F10 or F12. Also, you could just go into the BIOS, and set the CD-ROM as the main boot drive. Also, another thing to do to make life easier is to set SATA to IDE Mode instead of AHCI. I did this with my Compaq laptop so I wouldn't have to worry about SATA drivers to install XP correctly.

Ok I can get my laptop to boot from cd but it says no hard drive to install to.I went to bios and ran self test and got a #1-07 fail.I know my hard drive works becouse it runs vista on it.

Certain prebuilt computers do not mix well with downgrading the OS since they usually dont off much driver support for other then the OS it came with make sure you can get all the needed drivers before you install. As for your hard drive do like what was already said make sure it is set to IDE mode first.

In bios main it says xp only and there is no option to set to IDE mode in phoenixbios

How about upgrading to Windows 7 instead of downgrading to XP..!!.? If you can afford it, the suggestion comes highly recommended..

if you are a teacher or student, you can likely get windows 7 for a heavily discounted cost.

Your comment is not very clear.. All i understood is that you prefer XP over win 7.. What do you mean by 'it wont allow to install other OS'.. Please explain it a little more clearly.. And what are your reasons for preferring XP over win 7.?

95 percent of the time you just have to get the chipset drivers directly from the manufacturer. Its not difficult.

Since you currently have Vista set up on this hard disk drive the boot code is set to call BOOTMGR. Windows XP install doesn't recognize the boot code in the boot sector so it tells you that there is no hard disk drive that it can install to.

The boot code needs to be changed to call NTLDR something that Windows XP install will recognize.

You can use the bootsect.exe utility found on the Vista installation DVD under the subdirectory named boot. Running the utility with the command-line options as follows should do the trick:

Drive:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt52 C: /force

where Drive is the drive where the Windows Vista installation DVD is located.

When i put my win xp disk in and boot from the disk it says no hard drive to install to and I don't like win 7 becouse it's slower than xp on my desktop and I know xp.

There is a major question I forgot to ask so my previous assumption about the boot sector may be incorrect.

Is the hard disk drive that is in your computer a SATA hard disk drive? If it is then you need a SATA driver for Windows XP since the Windows XP installation does not have this driver and won't recognize a SATA hard disk drive unless IDE emulation mode is turned on in the CMOS Setup Utility.

You haven't provided any details about your system so I can only speculate on what things to try.

You will want to run your hard disk drive in SATA AHCI mode, it performs much better than IDE emulation mode.

Download the following 32-bit Floppy Configuration Utility zipped file from Intel's website:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/17883/eng/f6flpy3289.zip&agr=&ProductID=&DwnldId=17883&strOSs=&OSFullName=&lang=eng

Extract the contents of the f6flpy3289.zip file to a floppy diskette.

When you boot up your Windows XP setup CD and you see the message "Press F6 if you need to install a 3rd party SCSI or RAID driver" press function key F6.

When prompted, select 'S' to Specify Additional Device.

When prompted, insert the floppy disk you created, and press Enter.

At this point you should be presented with a selection list depending on your hardware version and configuration.

Choose "Intel(R) ICH7M/MDH SATA AHCI Controller" and press Enter.

Press Enter again to continue. Leave the floppy disk in the system until the next reboot as the software will need to be copied from the floppy disk again when setup is copying files.

You can, as long as your USB memory stick is recognized during the "When prompted, insert the floppy disk you created, and press Enter" step.

You can use a USB Floppy drive but only the ones listed will work: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916196/en-us

You can use nlite to slipstream the drivers into a new installation disk (best option IMO)

I am not aware of any other options. sorry.

What drivers are you talking about slipstreaming to the new disk?

There is a freeware tool called "nLite - Deployment Tool for the bootable Unattended Windows Installation".

You use it to create a new customized bootable Windows XP setup CD that integrates (a.k.a. slipstreams) device drivers that are newer or don't exist on the original Windows XP setup CD so that you don't need to press F6 to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver.

I usually use CD-RW discs for this purpose.
