How to repair windows xp from dos prompt

I am at dos prompt c: but every executable command I type responds with I/O error reading drive a...abort retry fail? I have a corrupt win syd 32 file and do not have original disk. Help!! Ty!

    The error reading drive a: usually refers to a floppy drive, which in this case, makes no sense unless you are getting to the command prompt via a floppy disk.
